Tarot Practices

Welcome, my friends. Please step into The Thinning Veil. . .

October is here. The month that has a particular hush to it. Light changes, the air sharpens, and at times, you can feel the subtle press of the unseen against your skin. With Samhain on the horizon, many of us also notice old memories rising and intuition speaking louder. This month’s Tarot Inspiration is an invitation to work with that shift through a simple, nourishing practice you can return to again and again. If you join in, you’ll build a deeper connection to yourself and to your tarot practice, one prompt at a time.

Foggy evergreen forest path under dark trees, with misty gray light and a moody, quiet atmosphere.
Step into The Thinning Veil if you dare . . .

You can take October Tarot Inspiration at your own pace. A daily prompt, a weekly spread, a single card when you feel called. There’s no right or wrong way to do it – just your way!

What this portal is about

When the veil feels thin, life can feel more vivid. It can be beautiful, but it can also feel a little confronting.

You might notice some or all of the following:

  • Your dreams getting louder, stranger, or more symbolic

  • Old stories resurfacing in relationships, family dynamics, or self-talk

  • A stronger pull towards solitude, reflection, and clearing your space

  • A sharper sense of what’s true for you, and what you’ve outgrown

  • A desire to set boundaries and protect your energy

  • Creativity returning in bursts, alongside a need for rest

Think of The Thinning Veil as a portal where pretence is stripped away the moment you cross the threshold. It’s a month for noticing what’s been hidden, unspoken, postponed or even ignored, and choosing to face it with courage.

Because October can bring intensity, pacing matters. This offering is all about inspiration, so leave thoughts of perfection or pressure at the door. You don’t need to do everything. You can work daily with the 31 prompts, work weekly with the spreads, or work intuitively by choosing only what calls to you.

Tarot and journaling as a compass

I’ve been reading tarot for over a decade, and journaling just as long. For me, both go hand in hand. Tarot is one of the simplest ways to hear yourself. A card pull slows the mind down and gives your intuition something to speak through. It helps you name what you’re feeling and make choices that are aligned with who you are now.

Journaling deepens that process. It gives you a place to explore the story behind the card, to ask better questions, and to track what changes over time. Even a few lines is enough. Or just a list of words to explain how you feel. Journaling is only ever about expression, not perfection or eloquence.

If you’re new here, this monthly series is designed to be practical. You don’t need to be an expert reader with a perfect routine. You just need a willingness to show up and listen.

Something new! Choose your path: Lantern or Torch

The series is shifting onto a new path this month. From reading your emails and messages, I know there’s a mix of beginners and more seasoned tarot lovers enjoying the prompts, so from this month, you get to choose how you want to work with the prompts. There are now two paths; lantern and torch. Here's how each path works:

Lantern Path (Beginner): These are supportive and confidence-building prompts. You’ll focus on noticing what’s present and making small shifts.

Torch Path (Seasoned): The prompts are deeper and more direct. You’ll explore patterns, truth-telling, and transformation.

You can switch paths at any time. Some days you’ll want the Lantern. Other days you’ll be ready for the Torch.

How to choose

  • Choose Lantern if you feel stretched, tired, fragile, or you’re building trust in your intuition.

  • Choose Torch if you feel resourced, curious, fiery, and ready to be more honest with yourself.

  • Choose both! You might like to journal with Lantern and pull cards with Torch, or vice versa. The only rule is that there's no rule.

3 ways to take part

1) Daily

Use the 31 prompts as journal prompts or 1-card pulls.

2) Weekly

Each week has a 3-card spread, plus two journal prompts (one Lantern, one Torch). This is a lovely rhythm if you want structure without pressure.

3) Intuitively

Pick a prompt when you feel called. You might dip in once. You might step in every day for a week. Again, move at your pace.

The Daily Prompts

I'll start with October’s prompt list. Remember, these can be used to journal, draw a card or simply reflect upon during the day. The list is available as a PDF download directly below, or you can screenshot the prompt graphics.

Weekly Spreads & Prompts

Next are the weekly spreads with prompts and expanded guidance.

Week 1: At the Threshold

Theme focus: Noticing what’s shifting and naming what you’re stepping into.

Spread name: The Threshold Lantern

Card 1: What’s coming closer (the theme, feeling, or truth rising to the surface)

Card 2: What I’m stepping out of (an old pattern, habit, or identity loosening its grip)

Card 3: My next right step (a practical action or attitude for the week)

Lantern Prompt: What’s one thing I can acknowledge this week without trying to fix it?

Torch Prompt: What am I being asked to admit, even if it changes my plans?

Expanded Guidance: Pull these cards with the intention of clarity. October can bring a rush of intuition, but you don’t need to act on every feeling. Start by naming what’s present.

If Card 1 feels intense, remember that this awareness is already a step. If Card 2 shows a familiar pattern, treat it as information rather than a judgement. And for Card 3, look for the smallest meaningful step. The point is to cross the threshold consciously.

Lantern journal prompt: What do I sense is changing in me, and what do I need to feel supported through it?

Torch journal prompt: What am I afraid I’ll lose if I step forward, and what might I gain?

Week 2: Meeting the Mirror

Theme focus: Seeing patterns clearly and responding with honesty.

Spread name: The Mirror's Truth Spread

Card 1: The mirror (what’s being reflected back to me right now)

Card 2: The trigger and the teaching (what’s activating me, and what it’s pointing to)

Card 3: The wiser response (how I can meet this with self-respect)

Lantern Prompt: What’s one pattern I can notice this week with curiosity?

Torch Prompt: What am I projecting, and what would change if I owned it?

Expanded Guidance: This week is about observation. If you feel defensive, that’s a clue. Let the cards show you the pattern without rushing to label or fix it. Card 2 can be especially illuminating. If it feels personal, pause and ask, “What is this trying to protect?” Then let Card 3 guide you into a response that honours your values.

Lantern journal prompt: Where do I keep repeating myself, and what do I want instead?

Torch journal prompt: What truth would set me free, even if it’s uncomfortable at first?

Week 3: Reclaiming Your Power

Theme focus: Boundaries, energy, and choosing yourself with clarity.

Spread name: The Power Return Spread

Card 1: Where my power is leaking (a habit, dynamic, or belief that drains me)

Card 2: What strengthens me (a resource, boundary, or practice that restores me)

Card 3: The action I’m ready for (a clear step that honours my energy)

Lantern Prompt: What’s one small boundary I can practise this week?

Torch Prompt: Where am I negotiating with my own needs?

Expanded Guidance: Consistency, clarity, and self-respect are signs you’re in your power. If Card 1 points to a relationship or obligation, keep your focus on what’s within your control. Card 2 is your anchor. Let it show you what genuinely restores you. And when you get to Card 3, aim for a step you can actually take. Keep it manageable, especially if you’re working on making a change others might push against.

Lantern journal prompt: What drains me most, and what’s one change I can make that feels doable?

Torch journal prompt: What identity do I need to release to live with more self-respect?

Week 4: The Return with Wisdom

Theme focus: Integration, meaning-making, and choosing what you carry forward.

Spread name: The Wisdom Keeper Spread

Card 1: What I’m taking with me (a lesson, strength, or truth that’s now part of me)

Card 2: What I’m laying down (a burden, belief, or attachment I’m ready to release)

Card 3: What I’m committing to (a vow, practice, or standard for the season ahead)

Lantern Prompt: What do I want to remember about myself as the season turns?

Torch Prompt: What am I ready to end, so I can begin again with integrity?

Expanded Guidance: This is an integration spread so let it be simple. It’s not about trying to solve everything in three cards. You’re choosing what’s essential and realistic.

Card 1 shows what’s already true. Card 2 shows what you can stop carrying. Card 3 is your commitment, and it works best when it’s specific, so choose a boundary, a practice, a standard— whatever builds a structure to support you.

Lantern journal prompt: What has this month shown me about what I need, and how can I honour that?

Torch journal prompt: What vow am I ready to make to myself, and what will it require of me?
